Postseason on the Horizon
Combined season record to a stunning 80-7
Twenty more wins. That's how our six Club Tennis captains responded over the past week, pushing the combined season record to a stunning 80-7 (.920) as district tournaments come into view. Five of six captains added wins this week, and three of them crossed the 14-win mark.
But the headline isn't just the wins -- it's who's beating whom. In a moment that captures everything great about high school tennis, Bishop Kelly siblings Sofia and Will Guzman handed undefeated tournament team Gabbi Molen and Ryan Anderson their second loss of the season on April 27. That kind of intra-captain crossover is what makes following this group so much fun.

This Week's Highlights
Gabbi Molen -- Middleton (19-2, +3-1 this week)
Gabbi keeps stacking wins, but she also tasted her second loss of the season. On April 27, she and tournament partner Ryan Anderson ran into Bishop Kelly's brother-sister duo Sofia and Will Guzman and dropped a tight 6-0, 6-4 match. Gabbi responded the way you'd expect from a 19-win player -- with three more wins, including a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory over Twin Falls on April 30. Her doubles TRPR settled at 13.2 -- still elite, still the most prolific record in the group. Nineteen wins is the highest captain total of the season.
Sofia Guzman -- Bishop Kelly (14-1, +4-0 this week)
The week belonged to Sofia. She and brother Will Guzman had a perfect run -- four wins, no losses, including the marquee 6-0, 6-4 takedown of Gabbi and Ryan Anderson on April 27. She also closed out the week with a 6-1, 6-3 doubles win over Borah on April 28 paired with Lauren Mallory. Sofia's doubles TRPR has surged to 13.7 -- now tied with Colton Symes for the highest doubles rating among all six captains. Twelve straight doubles wins for the Sofia/Will partnership and counting.
Ryan Emerson -- Bishop Kelly (14-1, +4-0 this week)
Ryan had the most diverse stat line of any captain this week. Three doubles wins with Ellis Brown plus a milestone moment -- his first competitive singles win of the season, a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Borah's Gary Cook on April 28. Ryan now has three singles wins and 11 doubles wins, the most balanced two-way captain on the roster. His doubles TRPR climbed to 13.4, and he's now won with four different partners this season. Eleven straight wins since his only loss back in March.
Heidi McMillan -- Boise (14-2, +3-1 this week)
Heidi had her busiest week of the season -- three wins, one loss, and a position change. After dominating the singles ladder all spring, she shifted into doubles full-time and went 3-0 with partner Savah Marsh, including a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kuna on April 27. Her one setback came against Eagle on April 26, a 7-6, 6-4 loss with Kellen Linderman. The good news? Her doubles TRPR has now caught up to her singles rating at 12.5, making her the only captain with double-digit wins in both disciplines (7-1 singles, 7-1 doubles). Most versatile season of any captain on the list.
Colton Symes -- Eagle (10-0, +3-0 this week)
Still perfect. Colton and Tyler Osborne hit double-digit wins this week with three more dominant doubles results -- including a 6-1, 6-0 win over Boise on April 26 and a 6-0, 6-1 win over Owyhee on April 27. The Symes-Osborne partnership is now 10-0 with only a handful of games conceded all season. His doubles TRPR jumped to 13.7, tied with Sofia for tops in the group. Ten matches, ten wins, and no real challenges yet. The biggest unanswered question of the season: who, if anyone, beats Colton and Tyler?
David Wang -- Bishop Kelly (9-1, +3-0 this week)
David is back. After a two-week break, he returned with three straight wins -- two singles and a doubles. His standout performance was a gritty three-set comeback against Borah on April 28 (2-6, 6-0, 10-3) with partner Brooke Carr. He also rolled past Middleton 6-0, 6-0 in singles on April 27 and beat Columbia 6-2, 6-1 the day before. David's singles record is now 7-1, and his TRPR has climbed to 11.3 singles / 11.5 doubles. One win away from double-digit territory.
What We're Watching
- Captain vs. Captain -- The Sofia/Will Guzman win over Gabbi/Ryan Anderson on April 27 was the moment of the week. Two of our captains, two top-tier doubles teams, one unforgettable result.
- The 13.7 club -- Sofia and Colton are tied for the highest doubles TRPR in the group. If both keep winning, who finishes the season at the top?
- Ryan's first singles win -- Eleven doubles wins is impressive. Adding three singles wins -- including one this week against Borah -- shows just how much range Ryan has built into his game.
- Heidi as the two-way star -- 7-1 in singles, 7-1 in doubles. Nobody else on this list has put together that kind of dual-discipline season.
- Colton's 10-0 start -- Ten matches, zero losses, and his TRPR keeps climbing. Eagle's top doubles team might be the most dominant in the state right now.
- David's return -- Three wins in his first week back means he's right on the doorstep of 10. The depth across this Bishop Kelly captain trio is staggering.
- District tournaments are coming -- These captains have built every kind of resume you could want heading into the postseason. The next two weeks will tell us how they finish.
We'll be back next Monday with another update as district play tips off.
