How Rankings Work
How they're calculated and what they show
Ever wonder how player rankings are calculated each week? Here’s a quick breakdown of how we track progress and performance throughout the season.
Initial Rankings
At the start of the season, each player receives a baseline rating based on their WTN (World Tennis Number) using the formula:
(40 - WTN) × 100
Players without an existing WTN were assigned a number based on their Placement Combine performance. In some cases, adjustments may be made after a visual assessment to ensure fair placement for everyone.
Earning Match Points
Each week, players gain or lose points depending on their match outcomes. The calculation takes into account several key factors:
Base Points: +100 for a win, -50 for a loss
Opponent Strength: Wins against higher-ranked players earn more points
Match Recency: Matches played in the last 35 days are weighted up to 1.3x
Match Type: Doubles matches count for 80% of singles match value
Point Limits
To keep competition balanced and fair:
Every win awards at least +50 points
Every loss deducts no more than -50 points
These limits help prevent extreme swings in rankings while still rewarding strong performance.
Weekly Ranking Updates
Rankings are updated at the end of each week once all matches are completed. Your new ranking = last week’s ranking + (points earned or lost this week). The point changes next to the player rankings will show the total point increases or decreases from the start of the season.
This rolling system highlights consistent effort and improvement across the season, so every match truly counts! 💪🎾
