Captain Highlights

Heidi McMillan — Boise High School (5-0)

Heidi is the captain to beat right now. She's a perfect 5-0 to start the season, dominating in both singles and doubles. In singles, she cruised past Capital's Marley Case (6-0, 6-1) and Meridian's Annabelle Walthall (6-0, 6-1) before gutting out a three-set thriller against Borah's Isabelle Bourgeau (6-7, 6-4, 11-9) — the kind of win that shows what championship-level composure looks like. In doubles with partner Savah Marsh, she hasn't slowed down, picking up two more wins including a 6-0, 6-2 victory over fellow captain Sofia Guzman and Will Guzman in a Bishop Kelly matchup. Heidi is playing like someone on a mission in her final high school season.

Gabbi Molen — Middleton High School (5-1)

Gabbi has been one of the busiest captains early on, already logging six matches — all in doubles with partner Tia Marston. The pair has been dominant, posting five wins and only one loss. They kicked off the season with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Hillcrest, followed by a pair of wins at an early-season tournament against Rigby (6-2, 6-4) and Parma — where they rallied from a set down to win in a match tiebreaker (6-7, 6-1, 10-5). Their lone loss came in a tight three-setter against Emmett (4-6, 6-3, 12-10) that could have gone either way. Most recently, Gabbi and Tia knocked off Columbia (6-0, 6-0) and Rocky Mountain (6-2, 7-5). Gabbi's doubles rating of 12.2 leads all six captains.

Colton Symes — Eagle High School (2-0)

Colton has been surgical in his two doubles matches with partner Tyler Osborne. They opened with a 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Ridgevue and followed it up with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Centennial. Not a lot of court time yet, but Colton clearly hasn't lost a step — when he's on the court, opponents aren't getting much.

David Wang — Bishop Kelly High School (2-1)

David is competing in singles this season, and he's off to a solid 2-1 start. He opened with a convincing 6-2, 6-0 win over Skyview's Gabe Lawson, then showed grit in his next match, coming back from losing the first set 0-6 against Nampa's Takeo Sanders to win in a match tiebreaker (0-6, 6-4, 10-4). His only loss came against Boise's Jack Parent (7-5, 6-1). For a player who picked up a racket less than two years ago, David continues to prove he belongs at the highest level.

Ryan Emerson — Bishop Kelly High School (2-1)

Ryan has been playing doubles with different partners early in the season, going 2-1. He opened with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 win over Skyview alongside Luke Perko, and added another 6-0, 6-0 win against Nampa with Lauren Mallory. His loss came in a competitive match against Boise's Fisher Andrews and JP Hay (6-2, 6-3). Ryan's versatility with multiple partners shows his ability to adapt — a trait that will serve him well as the season progresses.

Sofia Guzman — Bishop Kelly High School (2-1)

Sofia is 2-1 in doubles to start her senior season. She opened with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Skyview alongside Ellis Brown, then paired with Ashley McArthur for a solid 6-4, 6-2 win over Nampa. Her loss came against Boise's Heidi McMillan and Savah Marsh (0-6, 2-6) — a tough draw against a fellow captain who's been dominant this season. Look for Sofia to continue building momentum as she plays out her final high school season.

What We're Watching

  • Heidi's unbeaten run — Can she keep the perfect record going as competition stiffens?
  • Gabbi and Tia's doubles chemistry — This Middleton pair looks like one of the best in the valley.
  • David's resilience — That comeback from 0-6 down shows he's developing the mental toughness to compete with anyone.
  • The Bishop Kelly connection — Three of our six captains play for BK. How they push each other in practice could fuel a deep postseason run.

Stay tuned — we'll be back next week with another update as district play continues to heat up.
