100 Wins and District Week
Twenty-one new wins and only four losses
It happened this week. Our six Club Tennis captains crossed the 100-win threshold as a group, finishing the week at a combined 101-11 (.902). They got there the hard way too -- in the busiest week of the season, with district tournaments tipping off and one Tuesday packed with more matches than any captain has played all spring.
Twenty-one new wins. Four new losses. A couple of huge upsets between Bishop Kelly captains. And one undefeated streak that just keeps refusing to break.

This Week's Highlights
Gabbi Molen -- Middleton (23-3, +4-1 this week)
Gabbi smashed through 20 wins this week, finishing at 23-3 -- the most wins of any captain this season. She and Ryan Anderson played five matches in a single day on May 5 and went 4-1, including a hard-fought 7-6 (7), 6-4 win over Emmett and a three-set 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 victory over a Middleton intra-team pairing. The one loss was a 6-0, 6-3 defeat to Bishop Kelly's Luke Perko and Lauren Mallory -- a duo that will appear again in this update. Gabbi's doubles TRPR climbed to 13.9. Twenty-three wins. The captain win leader.
Heidi McMillan -- Boise (18-2, +4-0 this week)
The week of the season for Heidi. Four matches, four wins, no sets dropped -- including a 6-1, 6-0 win over Eagle's Ezra Gingg and Ava Urquiaga on May 4. The Savah Marsh partnership is rolling, having reeled off nine straight wins. Heidi's doubles TRPR jumped to 13.8, now her highest mark of the season, while her singles rating holds at 12.5. She's the only captain on this list with double-digit wins in both singles and doubles, and she's now tied with Gabbi for second-most overall wins on the roster at 18.
Sofia Guzman -- Bishop Kelly (17-2, +3-1 this week)
Sofia and Will Guzman had their first real stumble of the spring. After winning their first three of the day -- routine routs of Columbia, Vallivue, and a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Middleton -- the sibling duo ran into Bishop Kelly teammates Luke Perko and Lauren Mallory and dropped a 6-2, 6-2 result. It was Sofia's second loss of the season, both coming from within their own school. Despite the setback, Sofia's doubles TRPR surged to a season-high 14.3, still one of the most active and productive doubles seasons in the group.
Ryan Emerson -- Bishop Kelly (17-1, +3-0 this week)
Ryan and Ellis Brown finally got back together as a full-time partnership -- and the results were exactly what you'd expect. Three doubles wins on May 5 against Emmett, Middleton, and a second Middleton lineup. The Brown partnership has now won every match it has played together this season. Ryan's doubles TRPR climbed to 14.1, second only to Colton in the group. Seventeen wins, one loss. The most consistent two-way captain on the list at 3-0 singles and 14-1 doubles.
Colton Symes -- Eagle (14-0, +4-0 this week)
Still perfect. Colton and Tyler Osborne went 4-0 on May 4 with three straight 6-1 / 6-0 type results plus a 6-1, 6-4 win over Timberline that was actually competitive. Their doubles TRPR jumped to 14.8 -- the highest of any captain in the group, and arguably the highest of any doubles team in the state. Fourteen matches into the season, the Symes-Osborne combination still hasn't dropped a set. Anybody have a plan for stopping them?
David Wang -- Bishop Kelly (12-3, +3-2 this week)
David had the most action of any captain on May 5 -- five singles matches in a single day. He went 3-2 with wins over Vallivue, Middleton, and Emmett, and tough losses to Nampa and Skyview (the latter a three-set thriller, 6-4, 4-6, 10-7). It was a brutal day of singles tennis -- a marathon, really -- and David came out the other side with his singles record at 10-3 and his TRPR settled at 12.2. Twelve wins, still climbing.
What We're Watching
- The Perko/Mallory factor -- Two of our captains had their best doubles streaks broken by the same Bishop Kelly duo on the same day. Luke Perko and Lauren Mallory beat Sofia/Will Guzman 6-2, 6-2 and Gabbi/Anderson 6-0, 6-3. That's a story worth following.
- Colton at 14-0 -- He's now beaten Centennial, Mountain View, Timberline, Boise, Owyhee, Century, Borah, Rocky Mountain, Capital, Ridgevue, and others. Fourteen straight, doubles TRPR at 14.8. Who, if anyone, breaks the streak?
- Heidi's perfect week -- Four wins, zero sets dropped. The Marsh partnership is up to nine straight, and Heidi's doubles rating is now nearly identical to her singles. The most well-rounded captain season on the board.
- Gabbi's marathon Tuesday -- Five matches in one day, 4-1 result, including the most competitive three-set win of her season. That's how you get to 23 wins.
- Ryan and Ellis Brown -- Reunited and undefeated together. Three quick wins on May 5 and a doubles TRPR climb to 14.1.
- District tournaments are here -- Most of the new matches this week came from district play. The next two weeks will determine who's playing into state.
We'll be back next Monday with district results and a look ahead to the state tournament.
